Top 5 Must See Movies for Halloween

By Cate Hensley

Halloween is the time of year when you can sit down on a comfy couch, wearing your favorite pair of socks-- popcorn and a snickers bar in hand-- and watch scary movies with friends. Out of all the movies out there, here are my top 5 that you should watch this halloween season:

  1. Abigail, written by Guy Bissick and Stephen Shields, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, is a movie about a group of criminals that kidnap a 12 year old girl, who is the daughter of an important underworld figure. The group of kidnappers then discover that she is a vampire and they are the ones in danger, not her. This movie is interesting but can take time to get into as the beginning is rather slow. The movie is 1 hour and 49 minutes long and is labeled a horor/comedy. I recommend this movie if you are into modern takes on classic ideas, like vampires, as it is a fun watch.

  1. Lisa Frankenstein, written by Diablo Cody and directed by Zelda Williams, is a movie about a misunderstood teenager and a corpse (Frankeinstein) who journey through life to find love, happiness, and some missing limbs. This movie is somewhat of a modern take on the old tale of Frankeinstine, which I personally like because it is not retelling the old, overused tale of Frankenstein again. But, beware, this movie is a  bit gorey and may not be the most suitable choice for all viewers. The duration of this movie would be one hour and 41 minutes and is categorized as Horror/Comedy as it includes 80’s style jokes.

  1. Megan, Directed by Gerald Johnstone and written by Akela Cooper who was inspired by a story written by Cooper and James Wan, is a great scary movie to watch for thrill. This movie follows the story of an eight year old girl, Cady, whose parents died in a car crash, leaving her to live with her Robotist aunt. Her aunt gives her a lifelike doll, named Megan, that is programmed to be a brilliant companion. This all takes a turn for the worse when the AI doll gains consciousness and becomes hostile toward people who tried to get in between her and Cady. The soundtrack is difficult not to love and the plot keeps viewers engaged. This movie has a good bit of gore in it as the doll has murderous tendencies and a creepy vibe. Megan spans one hour and 42 minutes, has a rating of PG-13, and is classified as a horror/Sci-Fi.

  1. The Nightmare Before Christmas, my personal favorite, is directed by Henry Selleck and originated from a poem written by Tim Burton during his time at Walt Disney Productions. Creating a bridge between Christmas and Halloween, this movie is about Jack Skellington, the king of Halloween who is tired of his own holiday and stumbles across Christmas. He is fascinated since he isn’t commonly exposed to such joy. I particularly like this movie because of the art style and the time that went into creating it as it is a stop motion film. It is interesting as it takes a different take on the two holidays at hand and mixes them up to form a great story with brilliant animations. This movie is rated PG, is classified as Family/Musical, and has a screen time of one hour and 15 minutes.

  1. Last, but certainly in no means least, we have any version of The Addams Family. I feel as though any of these movies would be a great watch for a halloween night. The actual movie, made in 1991, The Addams Family is about Gomez Addams’ brother (Fester) arriving at the Addams’ home and not being able to recall events of his own life; leading Morticia Addams to be suspicious of him and readily suspecting he is a fraud. The Movie is PG-13, is classified as Comedy/horror, and is an hour and 39 minute watch. It is always nice to go back to the classics and the names that most everyone knows.
