Senior Vocal Recital

Jia Johnson

On November Thirtieth at Trinity Lutheran church the three vocal music seniors, Rylie Wertman, Mitchell Parmelee, and Kendall Whittington performed their senior recital. This is their final recital at Barbara Ingram and they did a wonderful job. The majority of the pieces performed were sung in Italian and German, German being arguably one of the hardest languages to sing in. This exhibited their talent and growth throughout the years. Some pieces that stood out from each of them were “Lydia,” which was an Italian piece performed by Kendall, and composed by Gabriel Fauré “No one Else” performed by Rylie and composed by Dave Malloy, and “Vittoria Mio Core,” which was an Italian piece performed by Mitchell and composed by Giacomo Carissimi. These pieces stood out to many people due to the expression the vocalists exhibited during them, although, all of them sounded amazing.

The entire recital was filled with a lot of extremely emotional pieces. The majority had themes of religion or romance with a slower sorrowful sound. Each vocalist took on different themes overall. Rylie’s seemed to be more romantic and about heartbreak, Kendall’s were much more empowering, and Mitchell’s were more about finding religion in times of need and reminiscent of past loves in a melancholy light. The pieces followed that progression which helped with the cohesion of the recital which was very well put together. The way they utilized songs to tell such powerful stories, even if you could not understand the words you could understand the message based on the infliction of the words alone. A good example of this is in a majority of Rylie’s pieces her voice is raised to a higher pitch giving a sound of pleading to them signifying the theme of unrequited love. Kendall’s voice was also powerful which complimented the pieces she sang very nicely.

What an amazing way to exhibit how far the seniors have come throughout the past three years. Congratulations once again to Rylie Wertman, Kendall Whittington, and Mitchell Parmalee, as well as to Mrs. Melissa Mackely and Mrs. Jessica Reynolds.
