On October 29th, the Maryland Theater was full for the Spooktacular hosted by the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts Instrumental Department. Usually, the Instrumental Department does a fall concert this time of year, and was pumped to try something new! An entirely new type of concert was a bit of a challenge though, since no one knew what to expect. Some changes had to be made at the last minute, for example: a few performers got sick! But the students rose to the challenge and performed beautifully.
During the Spooktacular, both the performers and the audience members wore costumes. Children trick-or-treated from candy-filled and decorated instrument cases in the lobby. The music played varied in styles ranging from creepy, goofy halloween-y, rock, and even a flamenco piece. The concert also had skits done by a few students in between each set that followed a story line of three audience members who were being tricked into thinking the theater was haunted. It was a cute touch to the performance that added a bit of excitement.
It took the Instrumental Department a month to prepare for the Spooktacular as everyone was perfecting their pieces.
Josephine Metz, a clarinet player in the band said, “the hardest part about practicing was getting up to tempo, but I’m really excited for you guys to hear our performance!” Josephine’s favorite piece to perform was, “Heart of Madness.” Another band-favorite piece was, “Music for a Darkened Theater.” This is trumpet player, Sydney Jones’ favorite. Both of these songs were amazing and put everyone into the Halloween spirit.
All in all, the concert demonstrated talent and passion from the instrumentalists. The audience could feel the energy in the music! By watching them perform anyone could see the effort they put into each note. It was great to have it all come together into one concert that many people got to enjoy. Congratulations to all the instrumentalists who performed in the concert and thank you to everyone who came to support BISFA!
