The Phantom Birth Story

By: Ethan Yamashita

Hello there dear reader! Welcome to The Phantom. This space was built by students for students. We as a club wanted to have a place where we could make good on the promise made by Ratatouille: “Anyone can [write/create/be a part of the newspaper].” But how did this great idea come to be? The answer is simple, dear reader. The Phantom was made where all the greatest ideas are born: at midnight in a group chat.

It all started when Tien Nguyen, our president, had a sudden realization. Tien is an aspiring journalist and for the journalism program for many colleges, she needs to submit a few pieces to a school newspaper or publication as part of a portfolio. But BISFA didn’t have a newspaper. We had the Newsletter, but that was exclusively run by Dr. Hovermale. So the suggestion was put forth: why don’t we start one? Ideas started bouncing off of each other as the hour hand ticked further on into the night. The texts kept flying and excitement continued building until eventually, a plan was made and a slogan was written: “The Phantom: BISFA news written by BISFA students.”

We’ve worked really hard to bring this into reality with many brainstorming sessions and organizational chats. We all believe in it and we can’t wait to showcase all the writing and art you all produce. So, dear reader, that’s how we came to be. That’s our portion of the story, and we can’t wait until you become part of this story too.
