Kidney Shilling
The Visual Arts Seniors had their senior expedition on Friday, March 24, 2023. It featured each of the seniors' amazing art, including pieces from freshman year all the way up to senior. Each wall in HCC’s Kepler's Theater was covered floor to ceiling with sculptures, portraits, landscapes, and so much more.
It took the seniors about a week to fully set everything up and the work that they put in definitely pulled off. While there, you could see some of the seniors showing family members around, directing them towards their pieces. Majority of these pieces were actually on sale for viewers to purchase. Audience favorites included Lydia McFarlands calculus notes with a gold star plastered atop, Darby Bittles, Archnophillia, drawing made from alcohol marker, and Grace Stoner’s, Vampot, ceramic clay pot.
The centerpiece of the show was a table with 13 multimedia sculptures on it. Each made by one of the seniors. These sculptures varied from a fish head made from cardboard, a bowl of nails and glue, and a blueberry eye pie. It was truly one of the coolest, yet weirdest family feasts.
This was the seniors first show where only their work was showcased. When asked about it, Chloe Notabartolo stated “We’re in a unique spot, since we’ve been here for four years, and we get to reflect on that… It’s cool to see a collection of it [art work] as a class.” Since these seniors have worked so hard the last four years it’s easy to say that they wanted this event to be jam packed with artwork from each year. “Despite maybe not liking a couple pieces from freshman year, we were going to include them anyway to show a process of growth.” Jasper Parks said.
With everything building up for their big night, instead of nerves, the seniors experienced great bonding opportunities while setting up. Photos posted to social media show exactly that! Not only was this an event where the seniors could feature their amazing artwork, but it was also a place for them to feature their personalities. Some being shown in sculptures, like Rae West double sided floating angel eye, along with mushroom paintings from Sophie Alsip. This night was blooming with creativity and positivity too.
There was also a wonderful accompaniment of live music throughout the night. Guitar played by Georgia Bantugan and piano played by Wanja Ramadhani, echoed through Kepler Theater, highlighting just how talented the visual arts department is.
It’s safe to say that the night was a hit, considering it was packed with family, friends, and even teachers! And luckily, for anyone who wasn’t able to attend on opening night, you still have until April 4th, 2023 to visit the exhibition and admire the time and effort each of the seniors put into the show!
